What to Expect at Your First Lock & Key Event

From check-in to the final raffle drawing, here's a step-by-step walkthrough of what happens at a Lock & Key event so you can show up relaxed and ready to mingle.

Not sure what your first Lock & Key event will be like? Here's a step-by-step walkthrough so you can show up relaxed, prepared, and ready to enjoy yourself.

Step one: buy your ticket

Step one is to buy a ticket on the website so you don't miss out. Events regularly sell out, so securing your spot ahead of time guarantees your place on the guest list — and it's what makes the even balance of men and women possible.

Arrival and check-in

Arrive a few minutes early and check in with your friendly Host. You'll be on the Registration List so you don't need to bring anything. They'll welcome you, hand you your lock (if you're a woman) or key (if you're a man), and explain how the night works. Your Host is there to make sure you feel comfortable all evening — never hesitate to ask them anything.

How the game works

You mingle and greet each person, trying your key in their lock. When a match happens, you both head to the check-in table and each receive a raffle ticket for the prize drawing at the end of the night. You'll also get a new lock or key so you can go back into the party and continue unlocking with new people. You'll meet everyone there at least once. You can talk as long or as briefly as you like.

The vibe

Expect 30 to 80 singles, a fun and no-pressure atmosphere, and an even balance of men and women. The room is social and upbeat — people are there to meet each other, so the energy is friendly and open.

What to wear

Nice casual always works. Many people come straight from work, so business casual is common. Be comfortable, look good, and smile.

The prize drawing

Toward the end of the night, the Host draws winners from the raffle tickets you earned throughout the event. It's a fun, celebratory way to close out the evening.

After the event

You'll have met a roomful of new people. Exchange contact info with anyone you'd like to see again — there's no pressure and no expectation. Many lasting connections started with a simple 'I'd love to continue our conversation.'

Your first event should feel fun, not stressful. Show up, be warm, and let the game do the hard work of breaking the ice for you.
