Meeting someone at an event is exciting — and a great first step. When you're ready to turn that connection into a one-on-one date, a few simple safety practices help you enjoy yourself with peace of mind.

Meet in public

Choose a busy, public place for your first date — a cafe, a well-trafficked restaurant, or a daytime activity. Public settings are safer, lower-pressure, and naturally easier to leave if you want to.

Tell someone your plans

Share where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be home with a trusted friend or family member. A quick text with the details is all it takes.

Arrange your own transportation

Get yourself to and from the date independently. Having your own way home means you're never dependent on someone you just met, and you're not getting in a car with someone you don't know well. They may have too much to drink, be a reckless driver, or turn out to be someone you don't want to share your home address with -- better safe than sorry.
